Welcoming Speech by Councillor Max Bradley,

Shed a Tier Chairman

3rd Shed A Tier Congress

Canberra, 22 March 2002

In the two years since setting up Shed a Tier as a lobby group I have found three very interesting things.

The first being that the vast majority of people have very little understanding of how the political system in Australia works or should work.

The second being that nearly as many people don’t really care about government.

And the third being, most people want the system changed.

This then seems like a contradiction, but I believe the reason that people think this way lays in that many of our politicians are more interested in what they can do for themselves and their party rather then what is best for Australia and Australians.

If our state and federal politicians were really interested in the welfare of Australians and looking after the environment we would not have to be here today.  As politicians, they should have along time ago finished what was started 150 years ago, and given us a much simpler system of government, one without the six state and two territory governments, which at this time are holding us and the environment to ransom, and the Murray Darling Basin is the real live, well some of it is still alive, example of this.
